The Oceania Synod of 1998

By Fr. Bill Stevens

One of the immediate preparations for the Great Jubilee will be the Synod of all the Bishops of the Oceania region in 1998. Bishop Walker will be among those present to look at questions that affect our part of the world.

The general theme of the Synod is "Walking with Christ as a way of Mission"

Some of the items to be discussed include:

The early contact of Missioners in Oceania and the cultural variations of our region.
Evangelisation by proclaiming our faith and through personal growth in faith.
Questions of Ecumenism, the presence of sects, questions of Social Justice and Peace that are relevant to our regions.
The Sacraments, Marriage and the Family, particular Vocations of the Priesthood, the Laity and Religious.
Finally the Bishops will look at Community building and the place of Mary as the Woman of Faith as our inspiration for the way forward.

Bishop Walker will be using these themes between now and the Synod in discussions, and will be collecting material to take with him.  Australia, as part of the Pacific region will be an important contributor to the Synod, whose deliberations will be gathered with Synods from other parts of the world to form a modern worldwide response of the Church to our times.

Both the Encyclical and the Assembly of Oceania presents us with material that we can use to ‘own’ our faith in a special way and further the establishment of God’s Kingdom in our world. It is truly a Mission we can individually embrace.
