MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE BROKEN BAY DIOCESAN JUBILEE COMMITTEE HELD AT WAITARA ON WEDNESDAY, 1^st July, 1998

PRESENT:

Frs. Bill Stevens (Chair), Michael Gormly, David and Maria Szeto, Larry Czarnik,  Marlene and Don Malone, Mary McGuinness, Noreen McGarry

MINUTES:

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and received.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

1. Fr. Stevens apologised for the incorrect article in the last diocesan Newsletter.
   
2. The National Jubilee Conference was attended by Fr. Stevens. He reported  that  the large Dioceses are doing a lot for jubilee especially Brisbane and Perth He suggests we could follow their efforts. Points noted from the conference -

   a . Schools need to be motivated to be more involved.

   b. The need for a 'national event' - a proposed 'journey of the heart' by leaders of all denominations and laity to Ayers Rock.

   c. Fr. Stevens suggest each Diocese could produce papers which would then be burnt and the ashes enclosed in a container which would be taken to Ayres Rock and placed in a memorial cairn.

3. The year 2000 has been nominated by the pope as the year of pilgrimage to the Holy Door in Rome.

   (Harvest Pilgrimages is the official Travel Agency).

4. It was expressed that the church needed to reconcile in not only the Aboriginal but other areas as well.

   This brought much discussion and Fr. Gormly reminded us that in whatever we do in preparation for Jubilee we must remain true to the gospel message.

   Four points where put forward for consideration:-

   a. To pilgrimage to the cathedral.

   b. Each parish to carry a rock to be used to build a cairn in the Cathedral grounds. A memorial plaque to be placed on the cairn.

   c. Perhaps the debt of a poor parish could be paid by a parish or combined parishes.

   d. A kit should be produced.

   Fr. Stevens will speak to Bishop David re these matters.

   The meeting closed at 9pm with a prayer.
